In case of an externally fed drum the liquid to filter is fed at the top of the rotating drum.

The filtrate flows twice through the drum, while the filtered solids remain at the outside of the drum and are removed by a scraper.

In case of an internally fed drum the filtrate flows through the drum, while the filtered particles are moved out of the drum by a helix and the rotation.
